  • In homage to Cailleach

Beira, The Veiled One, Queen of Winter, Divine Hag, Maker of Mountains, Mother of all Gods, ruling from her throne atop Ben Nevis...

Found throughout the legends of Wales, Scotland, Ireland and the Isle of Man, Cailleach ruled the winter months. Forming the valleys and hills of the country, freezing the ground where her staff touched, and announcing the start of winter and fighting spring.

Despite Cailleach's prominence in Celtic folklore, we are often quick to dismiss and ignore the work and impact of women throughout our past. Even in Dundee, where once 'She-Town' was kept alive by the women working the Jute mills when all other industry failed.

The Cailleach Festival was started to help return Scotland to its roots. When winter, wind and tied marked the progress of the seasons, and the eternal shift between Cailleach and Brighde provided for our ancestors.

In support of returning women to their roles as makers and shapers of this country, this event will support a bursary for students pursuing their Masters degrees in Heriot-Watt's Brewing & Distilling program, helping a new generation take up paddle, shovel and rake, and continue the legacy of their forebearers.
